Madeleine Choir School students in grades 4-8 competed in a school-wide, nail-biting bee that went into multiple rounds of "sudden death" between siblings! Congratulations to all our spelling bee participants, finalists, runners-up, and 7th grade champion. Three finalists will compete at the Regional Spelling Bee Championship! Well done!

Both the Cantata Brich dem Hungrigen dein Brot (Break with hungry men thy bread) by Bach and Britten’s Cantata Misericordium (Mercy Cantata) tell about compassion for our neighbor. Bach uses the story of the rich man who will not even spare the scraps from his table for Lazarus, a poor man. Britten’s work is based on the story of the Good Samaritan who stops to help a wounded man after a priest and a Levite have walked away from him. The central question in both Gospel stories — who is our neighbor? — is answered by these two great composers in ways that words alone cannot achieve.

If you’ve attended Mass at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, you’ve already encountered The Madeleine Choir School. You’ve heard it in the clear, reverent voices that rise from the choir loft with children singing music rooted in centuries of Catholic tradition. Boasting an impressive staff with incredible backgrounds and education, the Choir School is a powerful center of formation for students who will learn to appreciate the beauty and historical richness of the Catholic Church’s liturgies. What makes this so extraordinary is how rare it is. Very few places in the world still sustain a choir school dedicated to forming children in sacred music as part of their daily education.

Monthly visits by The Madeleine Choir School’s St. Dunstan Children’s Choir to the Capitol Hill Senior Living Community inspired a lasting friendship between student Emma and resident Joye. That connection led the 5th grade class to create more than 90 handmade holiday ornaments to be delivered to a community of seniors. The visit highlighted the school’s Caring Cardinals values and the power of simple acts of kindness to strengthen intergenerational bonds.
