If you’ve attended Mass at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, you’ve already encountered The Madeleine Choir School. You’ve heard it in the clear, reverent voices that rise from the choir loft with children singing music rooted in centuries of Catholic tradition. Boasting an impressive staff with incredible backgrounds and education, the Choir School is a powerful center of formation for students who will learn to appreciate the beauty and historical richness of the Catholic Church’s liturgies. What makes this so extraordinary is how rare it is. Very few places in the world still sustain a choir school dedicated to forming children in sacred music as part of their daily education.

Our tradition is to offer nine days of prayers (Novemdiales) to give thanks for Pope Francis. His papacy has been marked by a concern for making the teachings of Jesus relevant today, encouraging the church to be more of a 'Field Hospital' in service to struggling and troubled people, greater care for the created world and our common home, developing a stronger sense of solidarity with one another across the planet as brothers and sisters, and proclaiming confidence in the God who loves us unconditionally, and is always waiting for us with that unconditional love. Please join us in these daily prayers to honor Pope Francis.

God of peace,
you are peace itself;
a divided heart cannot find you,
a violent mind cannot welcome you.

Hear us as we pray for the victims,
so many of them young children,
of the terrible shooting in Texas.
Grant eternal life to the dead,
healing to the wounded,
and comfort to grieving families.

May the grief and shock we experience
unite us in our commitment
to rid our communities of the violence
that echoes in our streets
and haunts our imaginations.

We ask this through the One
who is our Prince of Peace:
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

The Madeleine Choir School took delivery of an 84-passenger school bus in early December. The bus was made possible by grant funding from the David Kelby Johnson Memorial Foundation.
The Madeleine Choir School was introduced to Elizabeth Johnson over a decade ago when she heard the student choristers sing in the Cathedral of the Madeleine. It was through Mrs. Johnson’s love and appreciation of the choir that the school has been fortunate enough to receive the needed funding to purchase a new bus. The David Kelby Johnson Memorial Foundation continues to carry out Elizabeth’s wishes to give to those in need in the name of her grandson. The procurement of the new bus has given the school the opportunity to strengthen its transportation system and continue to offer this service to students across the Wasatch Front.

The Choir School community was saddened to learn of the death of Archbishop George H. Niederauer on Tuesday 2 May in San Rafael, California. Archbishop Niederauer was the Eighth Bishop of Salt Lake City, serving in Utah from 1995 - 2005, and the Eighth Metropolitan Archbishop of San Francisco serving in this post from February of 2006 until his retirement in 2012. The Archbishop was the founding bishop of the Choir School, who after carefully reviewing the feasibility study prepared by a committee, approved the opening of the new school on 21 May 1996. The Choir School opened its doors to over 100 students on 26 August 1996. Drawing upon friends in his native Los Angeles, the Archbishop also provided the school with start-up funding, and later secured a $1 Million gift toward the purchase of the school’s new campus in 2002.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday 12 May in the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption in San Francisco. A Requiem Mass will be offered by Bishop Solis in the Cathedral of the Madeleine on Monday 15 May at 5:15 PM.

At long last the renovation of Jacquelyn M. Erbin Hall was completed yesterday, March 20, 2017, as faculty and students resumed classes in their new classrooms after the reprieve of Spring Break. We were honored to have Bishop Solis dedicate and bless the building, following a celebration of Mass of the Solemnity of St. Joseph at the Cathedral. The celebration also included the recognition of three key individuals who worked tirelessly to complete this very complex, historic restoration. The St. Cecilia Award was bestowed upon the project architect Brian McCarthy, and Ryan Hales and Tim Duke, our project managers with Okland Construction. Their hard work and dedication -- combined with the kindness and generosity of many donors, including our lead donors: The Emma Eccles Jones Foundation and The ALSAM Foundation -- were crucial to its completion. The Madeleine Choir School wishes to extend its sincerest gratitude to the many, many people who supported this effort over the past decade and a half, as the completion of this renovation will enable the Choir School to continue its mission to inspire young people to become engaged scholars, effective communicators, dedicated liturgical musicians, and responsible world citizens who seek to build a civilization of justice, mercy and love. Exodus 22:20-22

When I was a stranger, you welcomed me.

Let us pray.

Lord God,

to whom no one is a stranger

on displaced persons and abandoned children.

Render justice to the oppressed

and rouse us to do what is right,

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

With the mandate of the people, a new president has been elected, members of congress re-elected or newly elected, prompting us to now pray that God will bless and endow our new President and other political leaders with wisdom, right judgment, careful discernment and a passion for justice and liberty for all people. We must pray that the President and Congressional leaders will be committed to advancing the common good for the people of this nation and the world, and dedicated to protecting the dignity of each and every human life, whether they are Jewish, Christian or Muslim, Caucasian, Hispanic or African American, refugee or...

Congratulations to MCS Eighth Grader, Zosia Weglarz, as the recent recipient of two awards for her watercolor entry titled “Sunflowers” in the 2016 Greater Avenues Street Fair. Weglarz received the most votes in the People’s Choice Award category, and she was awarded the first place ribbon in the 10-14 year old category by the street fair “professional judges.”
“Zosia is that student who puts the most time and thought into her art projects,” says Choir School Art Teacher, Erin Mattes. “It is obvious that she wants to create meaningful pieces and each project is very special to her. I get so much satisfaction from seeing the creativity that the students bring to all the different projects we do at the Choir School, and I have certainly enjoyed watching Zosia express and develop her passion and talents as an artist. I was not surprised to hear that she won these awards.”

With the presidential election approaching there is much talk about making America great again. On 3 March we celebrate the second American born woman to be named a saint: St. Katharine Drexel. Katharine Drexel was born into immense family wealth, and her family regularly engaged in charitable efforts. But it was a visit to Pope Leo XIII and her request that the Pope send missionaries to assist with the Native American missions in New Mexico and Arizona that was to change her life: the Pope responded by asking her to become that missionary. Deeply moved, Katharine entered religious life to the shock of the social elite of Philadelphia, eventually establishing a new religious order known as the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament whose work was to focus on African American and Native American young people. Ben was a wonderful student and worked as a counselor at the summer camp for many of his high school years. Ben was a very kind and gentle soul. In your kindness please remember Ben in your thoughts and prayers, his brother Alex (MCS Class of 2006) and his parents Farrukh and Pam. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday 28 March at 10:00 AM in the Cathedral Church. The Choir School's older students will offer the Rosary for Ben in the Cathedral today (Thursday) at 11:30 AM. All are welcome.

May he rest in peace.

We are now in the final days of preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of the Lord. In these last seven days before Christmas, the church’s liturgy intensifies with prayers acknowledging our troubled world’s need for peace and freedom from all darkness and evil. The difficulties that continue for refugees, immigrants and those who struggle with disease or mental infirmity, the increasingly divisive rhetoric on religion and race, the senseless slaughter of innocent young people in Dunblane, Sandy Hook and Peshawar, and the darkness that sometimes clouds our own hearts and minds with less than noble thoughts, words and actions all compel us to recognize the need for new direction, a restored humanity, and, in fact, a Savior. O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light, sun of justice: come, shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death. (Click photo or headline to continue reading)...

The Madeleine Choir School launched a fundraiser addressing an issue very close to the heart of Pope Francis this week. The effort began with a goal to raise $4,000 to benefit refugees worldwide to welcome the Holy Father to the United States.
In recent days, Pope Francis has again called attention to the plight of the refugees fleeing from Syria and Iraq. He is especially concerned about the elderly, the children, and those with illnesses. There are many compelling images in the media surrounding this international tragedy. The images represent both the dire struggle of those searching for human life free of violence, terror and economic injustice, and the humane inspiration provided by simple individuals aiding those in need at this crucial time (click headline to read more).
