Congratulations to alumna Maria Stokes (MCS '12) on her recent recognition from the Exchange Club of Salt Lake City. They annually recognize two seniors as the Judge Memorial Catholic High School “Students of the Year.” Students are honored for their community service involvement and academic success. Exchange, America's Service Club, is a group of young men and young women working together to make our communities better places to live through programs of service in Americanism, Community Service, Youth Activities, and its national project, the Prevention of Child Abuse.

Congratulations to our student-athletes for their fine effort and sportsmanship at the 2016 UCAA basketball tournament finals.
Pictured here is the 7th Grade Girls' Team. They brought home the award we cherish the most at MCS: the Sportsmanship Award. Great job!

With the presidential election approaching there is much talk about making America great again. On 3 March we celebrate the second American born woman to be named a saint: St. Katharine Drexel. Katharine Drexel was born into immense family wealth, and her family regularly engaged in charitable efforts. But it was a visit to Pope Leo XIII and her request that the Pope send missionaries to assist with the Native American missions in New Mexico and Arizona that was to change her life: the Pope responded by asking her to become that missionary. Deeply moved, Katharine entered religious life to the shock of the social elite of Philadelphia, eventually establishing a new religious order known as the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament whose work was to focus on African American and Native American young people. With broken hearts we share news of the death of alumnus Ben Khan (MCS Class of 2009). Ben was a wonderful student and worked as a counselor at the summer camp for many of his high school years. Ben was a very kind and gentle soul. In your kindness please remember Ben in your thoughts and prayers, his brother Alex (MCS Class of 2006) and his parents Farrukh and Pam. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday 28 March at 10:00 AM in the Cathedral Church. The Choir School's older students will offer the Rosary for Ben in the Cathedral today (Thursday) at 11:30 AM. All are welcome.
Eternal rest grant unto Ben, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace.
May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

The Madeleine Choir School kicks off its twentieth anniversary celebration for the year ahead with a performance of Claudio Monteverdi’s Vespers of the Blessed Virgin 1610 on Sunday 6 March at 800 PM in the Cathedral of the Madeleine. Under the direction of Dr. Craig Jessop, the Choristers and the Cathedral Choir will be joined by an unusual array of early musical instruments, including Cornetts. Sackbuts and Theorbos. Musicians specializing in the performance of these unique instruments will travel to Utah from their performance and teaching positions at Stanford University, Indiana University and Harvard University to offer a unique opportunity for Utah’s musical community.

Our Holy Father Pope Francis is very close to us just now-he is working in Mexico this week, having arrived last Friday and staying through tomorrow evening. On Sunday he celebrated Mass in one of the slum areas of Mexico City that is riddled with crime and corruption and then visited a hospital for sick and disabled children. Yesterday he traveled to the border with Guatemala and the state of Chiapas where the indigenous people have suffered greatly – he celebrated Mass and spent the entire day with them. Today he travels to the state of Michoacan and its beautiful capital city of Morelia. Tomorrow, he will travel to our border near El Paso, Texas, where he will visit a prison and celebrate Mass in Ciudad Juarez where violent crime especially against women continues to cause great pain and suffering.

February 4, 2016 -- MCS rallied at the Utah State Capitol rotunda! In alignment with Pope Francis's encyclical—Laudato Si— and lead by Principal Baillie and Mr. Knibbe, over 300 MCS students marched from campus to the Capitol Building to deliver a message that change needs to happen at a legislative level to drastically improve air quality in Utah.

The Madeleine Choir School, a Catholic school in the Diocese of Salt Lake City, will be holding a clean air rally on Thursday, February 4th from 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. in the Capitol Rotunda. This is the second year students from the Choir School have aired their concerns about the excess smog in the Salt Lake Valley to our legislative representatives.

The Choir from Salt Lake City’s Cathedral of the Madeleine will present a concert of sacred music in St. Mary’s Cathedral of Immaculate Conception on Sunday, January 24th at 8:00 PM. The Choir of the Cathedral of the Madeleine features the boy and girl choristers from the Cathedral’s Choir School, the only coeducational Catholic Choir School in North America. Sunday evening’s performance will feature music of Peter Philips, Thomas Tallis and Gustav Holst. The concert is free of charge, and all are invited to attend.
