The 2015 Madeleine Festival Concert - Sunday, 10 May at 8:00 PM

Almost six years after the dedication of the Cathedral of the Madeleine, its first bishop and builder Lawrence Scanlan died on May 10, 1915. Marking the one-hundredth anniversary of his death, the Cathedral Choir and Chamber Orchestra present the musical setting of the Mass selected by Bishop Scanlan for the Cathedral Rite of Dedication in August of 1909: Charles Gounod’s Messe solennelle de Sainte-Cécile. This luxuriant work occupies a special place among Gounod’s Mass settings in that it established his reputation as a church composer and revealed an immediacy of expression seldom attained in subsequent settings of the Mass.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Te Deum in C Major will also be performed as a second work by the choir at this performance.

This performance will be presented in the Cathedral of the Madeleine.  Admission is FREE to the public. No passes are required.
