The MCS Campaign for the Field House and Early Childhood Education Center
The Madeleine Choir School is a mission of the Cathedral of the Madeleine, serving young people since 1996 in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade Eight. Modeled after the historic cathedral schools in Europe, and more generally after Westminster Cathedral in London, the Choir School offers a rigorous academic program, strong character formation in Christian values and beliefs, and activities designed to nurture the whole child. The Sciences, Language Arts, Mathematics, History, Theology, and two required world languages make up parts of the progressive curriculum.
The Choir School offers every student an exceptional musical education, including two years of violin study, music theory and history, and intensive vocal training. Students have the option of participating in alternative enrichment programs should they choose not to participate in a choir. The choristers regularly assist with the worship life of the Cathedral and participate in the Annual Concert Series. In addition, the choristers perform with other major arts organizations including the Utah Symphony, Utah Opera, the Nova Chamber Music Series, and an August 2019 collaboration with Ballet West in a production of The Way of the Rain | Earth Movements, featured in performance at the Eccles Theater for the United Nations 68th Annual Civil Society Conference.
Now entrusted with the care and education of nearly 450 students, The Madeleine Choir School urgently needs to address two specific areas crucial to the continuance of its service to young people and their families: an Early Childhood Education Center, and a Field House. Since the initial planning and conceptual phases of this project, construction costs have skyrocketed, pressing the urgent need to begin construction as soon as possible in order to avoid even greater cost increases.
Thanks to several generous lead donors, we have raised over $12 million for this project to date, allowing us to break ground in August of 2023. With about $200,000 still to go, we appreciate your continued support.
A Place to Begin
The Cathedral’s School has served children in the historic Avenues neighborhood for over 27 years.
With humble beginnings on the lower floor of the Cathedral, generous benefactors made possible the purchase of the former St. Mark’s-Rowland Hall School campus in 2002, and a renovation of the Old Main building – Erbin Hall – in 2017 provided a thoroughly modern academical village for our expanded student body in Pre-Kindergarten 3 through Eighth Grade. With one exception: the Cathedral School does not have a Gymnasium/Athletic Facility, nor does it possess adequate facilities for its growing Early Childhood programs.
The proposed Early Childhood Education Center will be a vibrant new facility, equipped to offer the very best in early child formation, allowing our youngest Cardinals a safe and inspiring place to learn.
A Place to Become
The Madeleine Choir School offers a holistic education that engages students and encourages them to discover who they are in a safe and nurturing environment. Through a variety of courses and activities, Cardinals become engaged scholars, effective communicators, dedicated liturgical musicians, and responsible world citizens. Our physical education curriculum focuses on lifelong health and activity, and exposes students to fun and diverse sports, games, and fitness opportunities.
The new Field House will provide the facility for our physical education curriculum, a ‘home court’ for our athletic teams to compete in, and whole school gatherings in inclement weather and when the local air quality index prevents outdoor play and recreation.
A Place to Belong
The Madeleine Choir School seeks to provide learning opportunities that foster the development of the whole child, beginning in Pre-K 3 and continuing through Eighth Grade. As students grow and mature, we work hard to ensure each child feels accepted and included for who they are and who they become at MCS. Just as our students find belonging on The Madeleine Choir School’s campus, our parents, teachers, alumni, supporters and friends each have a place to belong in our community.
Together, we can complete the final, crucial facility needed for our thriving downtown campus, and be strengthened for our continued service to young people. We hope you will join us.
