MCS Afterschool and Lunch | Recess Clubs

Do you like sharing your opinions, learning new things, and talking about what’s going on in the world? The Middle School Debate Club is the perfect place to do all that and more! Open to students in grades 6-8, this club will help you build skills you can use in and out of school.

We meet every Monday during lunch and lunch recess in Ms. Hoag’s classroom. Your club leaders, Ms. Hoag and Mrs. Oberle, are excited to help you grow as a speaker, thinker, and teammate.

In Debate Club, you’ll:

• Practice public speaking with confidence
• Learn how to create strong, convincing arguments
• Stay up-to-date on current events
• Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills
• Improve active listening and teamwork
• Learn how to respectfully debate and discuss important topics

Bring your lunch and your ideas, and join us for a fun and challenging time each week. Debate Club is a great way to meet new people, learn something new, and make your voice heard. 

 

Dance club will be a space for students to explore basic elements of modern and creative dance, some ballet terminology, and the art of choreography and improvisation. There will be a potential spring informal performance. Students should wear comfortable athletic clothing and bring water and snack to club. Dance club starts after school in the dance studio in Hitzelberger Hall with an expected dismissal of 4:30.

Latin Club (MCS's local chapter of the National Junior Classical League) is the place for the celebration of all things ancient. Greek mythology, Roman history, Latin memes, and more! We will play games, watch movies, wear togas, and more. We will also practice for Latin-related competitions, such as Certamen (Latin quiz bowl), the National Latin Exam, and the Pegasus National Mythology Exam.

3:45 - 4:10 on Wednesdays beginning January 22 - May 21

Learn the art of calligraphy in Mr. Stager's Calligraphy club! Students learn basic calligraphic forms. First time students start with the italic alphabet; more advanced students move on to the uncial alphabet and other forms as they progress. Calligraphy pens and ink are provided. Calligraphy club starts after school in Mr. Stager's classroom with an expected dismissal of 4:10.

Hiking weekends will be scheduled and shared at the first meeting.

The MCS Hiking Club is founded with the goals of forming community, encouraging physical activity, and fostering knowledge and love of our beautiful natural surroundings. The Club will meet once a month, each, for classroom education (on campus), after-school hikes (departing from and returning to campus on foot), and Saturday day-hikes (meet at local trailheads within an hour drive from campus). Enrolled students and their families are welcome to join as many activities as they are able! Hiking club starts after school in the middle school student loungewith an expected dismissal of 4:30 or at 5PM when hiking.
